No More Short Cuts!

Ditching crash diets for sustainable health and wellness, gearing up for healthier lifestyle? Instead of killing yourself on crash diets and quick gym formula, it’s time to make wiser lifestyle choices. If you want health that lasts, you have to take the long but sure built on regular diet, exercise, relaxation, god food and supplements.

Good diet+ exercise+ enough+ R&R. the truth is, health is not about how fast you lose the pounds but how effective you are in matching your weight to your ideal body shape and size. It’s about portioning- consuming food in smaller quantities. It’s also about watching what you our food is prepared and don’t choose what’s bad for you, even if it tastes really, really good. The 30-minute cardio workout in the morning actually does help in regulating blood circulation and keeping your lungs practiced. And whenever you feel that your body is giving you the sign to stop- take a breather and do something relaxing. It could save you a trip to the doctor.

The 4 Tests your Husband Should Take

Prostate ultrasound, the procedure will reveal if the prostate is enlarged or has developed an abnormal shape. It is also used during a prostate biopsy to help guide the physician (a prostate biopsy is where they take a bit of your prostate to determine if there are any cancer cells.) Endoscopy, this is where they put a tube with a camera in your body.

There are several versions depending on the situation. Perfect for checking if anything is wrong with your colon or if you have an ulcer, the endoscope aids in the visual analysis of the gastrointestinal tract and colon. Blood Chemistry, this simple blood test can check your glucose, protein, and cholesterol levels. With man’s affinity for salty and fatty foods, it would be very prudent to get your blood chemistry checked every now and then. Hepatitis B Screening, if either partner was sexually active prior to marriage, getting a hepatitis B screening is important to prevent it from spreading.

Fear Factor

Why is it so difficult to get your man on the path to health? He grits his teeth and increases the tension in his fist, his knuckles turning white. You can see the sweat forming on his brow as his eyes dash back and forth like a cornered animal. No, this is not a horror movie. It’s your husband feeling a sudden shot of anxiety as he decides to go to the hospital. Why is it so difficult to get him to go to a doctor? Is it the cost?

Average visits to a doctor can range from P500 to a thousand pesos. It may seem like a big amount but if you think of the treatments and medications you could have avoided with a simple checkup, it doesn’t seem like much. Is it the time? If your man can dedicate a whole morning to round of golf and several hours drinking the night away, then  why not two hours at the doctor?

Diet Dilemma

Natural, fresh foods will do your baby good. Glucose Phosphate Dehydrogenase is an enzyme that converts a certain substances in the body into its reduced form, which in turn protects our red blood cells from damage. G6PD deficiency will thus make a child anemic due to the destruction of his red blood cells. It is a rare heredity condition that affects individuals in varying degrees.

Here are a couple of remainders to help your child: 1. Strengthen his resistance to infection through immunization. 2. Avoid antibiotic medications like nitrofurantoin, chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid and those from the sulfa group, including cotrimoxazole. Also steer clear of anti-malaria medicines like primaquine, the anti-leprosy drug dapsone and pain relievers such as high dose aspirin. 3. Individuals with severe forms of G6PD deficiency may react to legumes like green peas, lima beans, or chick peas, kidney beans, and white beans from canned pork and beans. Soya-based products results in anemia.

The Importance of Correct Diagnosis

Stress, poor health, drugs, pollution, diet, childbirth; even the shampoos and products we use on our hair, can cause scalp problems that sometimes lead to hair loss, if left unattended. This is why correct diagnosis is essential. It is no use treating a man for male pattern hair loss if he is suffering from some form of Alopecia brought on by stress!

Each problem that is diagnose, needs its own specialised form of treatment and I will always recommend that one should either visit a registered Trichologist (always look for their certificate) or, if possible, visit The Belgravia Trichological Centre in Victoria, London SW1, where I, or one of my colleagues are always available to offer help and advice. The Balgravia Centre will usually recommend a Trichocheck initially. This entails a thorough examination of the hair and scalp by a qualified Trichologist, coast just 10 and takes about 20 minutes. A Trichocheck will clearly identify any hair or scalp problem or potential problem, so that any appropriate treatment course can be safely recommend.
