If you’re looking for a new multifunction printer you need to be careful and check not only the price tag of the printer itself but the replacement printer ink cartridges as well. The reason for this that these are the types of printer the manufacturers sell at cost and make their profit back from sales of replacement cartridges. Printers like the Epson Stylus SX115 are great because they have compatible ink cartridges available for them and although the genuine Epson SX115 ink cartridges cost £30 for a full set the compatible Epson ink cartridges cost only £15. Performance figures for the SX115 are impressive on paper but not all of these covert into the real world. Printing speed is not an inkjet printer’s forte but the Epson SX115 is slow by any standards, Epson’s claim of 34ppm (pages per minute) is not worth the paper it printed on as it refers to printing in draft mode and the quality of output in draft mode is so faint that it barely legible. Print quality in “standard setting is good and in photo quality it amazing (for a budget printer) although increasing the quality setting decreases speed dramatically giving the SX115 an average pages per minute output of around 4ppm. Scanning and coping facilities of the SX115 are good but nothing special really, although the copier works without the need for a PC to be connect which is convenient. The scanner also comes with software that enables converting of text documents into files that are editable on a PC as well as photo editing software for performing basic photo editing like red eye removal etc. Build quality of the device is robust and a big step up from previous models, this is backed up with a 1 year repair or replace guarantee from Epson.
